RE: a new virus!! (maybe) -- big time trouble!

For the first time, we were hit with a virus. According to the repairman, it's called Heur (her). According to the internet, it's been around for a while. He said it was new. He also said there is NO virus protection out there that's catching it. In the last few weeks he's had many people coming in with the problem. He had 6 on his desk!
Here's the problem.....the virus accesses when you close your firewall.....which we did while loading the new internet provider software. You can't load it without closing the firewall!!! Almost immediately, we lost EVERYTHING! All of everything was gone....no "start" at the bottom...no menus anywhere. Because it was a laptop, it would cost a lot to fix and they may not be able to fix it. We took it as a sign to buy another computer :B. Repairman said someone else had come in a few days ago and their USB ports were even fried and wouldn't work!!!
Good luck -- I hope all of you do NOT get it! and yes, I did have everything backed up (thank you, lord!)
What firewall were you using and what ISP?

RE: Sirius & XM Radio

well part of the agreement was that they had to offer a cheaper ala carte package, which is why I didn't renew a few months back. I need a different receiver as I under stand it, to do that.
bumpy
There was to much junk on the standard plan that I never listened to. When I had the full package I listened to about 6 stations and only 2 or 3 on a regular basis.
However, I think it's going to take about a year to get the new receivers designed and in production. That may be to long a wait for me and I will look to other radios. Short wave has always been fun along with some standard AM broadcasts.

RE: stove vent flapper

Only time I lock my flapper is when we put it in storage for the winter. I then unlock it in the spring after it's bath. Never had a problem with it going down the highway flapping.
I never had a problem with mine flapping either. Only had a problem when it went missing.

RE: Three Basic Newbie Questions

You have received good advice above. So i will not answer those questions.
But should point out that when you drain your hot water heater, be sure to stand at the side of it. So when the water gushes out, you won't get hit with it. Packs a lot of force, when that plug is disengaged. Mine blows out a good 15 to 20 feet.
And certainly the water heater should be off for a couple of days before, to allow the water to cool to normal unheated temperature.
Be sure to shut the water off to the RV before starting and double check that the electric heat element is OFF if you have one. An exposed heat element will burn out in a heart beat without water.
Lift the high pressure relief valve handle before pulling the plug, it will relieve the pressure you speak of. Once you pull the drain plug you can again lift the handle on the high pressure relief valve to speed up the tank drainage.

RE: Best Computer protection

As far as a Anti Virus, note: I'm not an expert, goes I use Eset NOD32 AV. I've been very happy with it for two years.
lol
I started using Nod32 after having to do a reformat of my laptop because of a virus. Had been using AVG as "protection". Haven't had any problems since,.....that I know of.
I ended up with Eset NOD32 for the same reason, almost. AVG found a virus and couldn't remove it nor would it tell me where it was, just that I had it.
I installed Eset and it took care of the problem. That was enough for me to stick with it. Several virus have tried to get in since but they have been killed on contact by NOD.

RE: Here's one for you!! Dogs and propane..........

...
Here's the 1st question:
For the RV'ers with big dogs, do you travel with them in the truck bed (crated) or in the camper? Is it illegal / safe to have them in the camper while going down the road?
Bryan
It can get pretty warm in a RV while towing, I don't suggest you keep your dogs in the RV legal or not.

RE: GMC/Chevy - Use of Tow-Haul or "Manual" with new Ally

On my 06 3500 DMAX/Alley I leave it in drive and use the TH until it starts searching for gears, up and down shifting, then I use the Manual to hold it in the the lower gear till the road evens out.
I also use manual when going down steep grades to hold the rig in a lower gear.
You are correct in your reading of the operation of "Manual".
My mpg improved after I put some miles on the truck.

RE: auqamagic IV toliet

Yes I have, more then I would like.
I found that letting the flush pedal snap back with more force rather then letting it return more gently helps. Your spring cartridge may require lubrication or may have become weak requiring replacement. Be sure the gaskets are clean and properly maintained.

RE: COMPOSTING TOILETS

I used a composting toilet for quite a few years while living remotely in the mountains. This was in a log cabin not an RV.
It worked fine in the cabin as we also lived on solar power it saved a lot of water pumping and the need for a septic tank. It was way better then a outhouse at 20 or more below zero.
If the compost is not healthy it will have a unpleasant odor. If it dies the odor will be more then unpleasant and so will to work to correct the reason the compost died.
Thinking back on it's operation I have to say that I will stay with my black tank and dump stations. There is more work involved with a composting toilet then meets the eye.
I suggest you read the operating instructions and specifications closely to insure that you can meet them in your planned RV use.

RE: Direct TV Distance Package

Yes you can get PBS & CW as well in the DNS package, you have to request them and pay extra for them, but they are available.
Yes this is true for CW but not necessarily for PBS. I can not get PBS try as I may. It has to do with the local station for your billing address and they granting permission for the feed. I was unable to get this permission even though I am currently over 2000 miles from their broadcast area and do not expect to return. DTV has been unable to assist much.

RE: Best Computer protection

I"m not a fan of Norton or McAffee.. epically McAffee, but that's another story or two.
I use AVG-Free from Girsoft, Spybot Search & Destroy, Ad-Aware and a thing called CCleaner which is basically a cookie tosser. but can do some other fun stuff too.
Of all the registery cleaners I've tried (3) it worked and did NO damage... The other two did damage.
Spybot and Adaware are similar in what they do and both are excellent, IMHO. Still, it helps to know just what they are doing so a reading of the help files is in order if you have never used these tools before. I use JV16 Power Tools (Payware) for the registry. Never had a mishap...yet.

I would strongly recommend that you are sure all of Norton is uninstalled/removed before attempting to install another brand of AV. Do a search on google for Norton removal issues and solutions.
PS: With the luck you have been having, stay away from my electronics... lol

RE: Condensation while running a/c

I've found that the only way to prevent mine from dripping is to pitch the rig slightly towards the door/awning side. If the rig is perfectly level it will drip inside.
Sounds like one of the two, or both, condensate drain holes may be partially plugged. It should not drip inside under normal circumstances.

RE: XM Radio Question

Yes it does. My understanding is that existing radios will work as they always do. To get A La Cart needs a different radio.
From their pdf file after clicking A la Carte at the top of the page. - "Available only for subscribers using next generation receivers who select channels via the Internet."
